Government Must Take Serious Steps to Enact Strict Laws Against Sacrilege: Advocate Dhami

Amritsar, June 27 : Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has strongly criticized the government for its inaction regarding the demands for strict legal action against those guilty of sacrilege. Expressing deep concern over the deteriorating health of Sikh youth S. Gurjeet Singh Khalsa, who has been staging a prolonged protest atop a tower in Samana, Advocate Dhami urged the government to address the issue with the seriousness it deserves.

He stated that the government has continually shown an irresponsible attitude toward issues affecting Sikh sentiments, endangering the life of a peaceful protestor. Dhami emphasized that sacrilege of Sikh religious texts and symbols is a grave matter, and the SGPC has consistently advocated for stringent punishment for the guilty.

The SGPC President pointed out that the committee has repeatedly written to governments demanding legislation for stricter laws against sacrilege, but unfortunately, successive governments have failed to act with due seriousness. “It is disappointing that even such a sensitive and emotional issue is not being addressed, forcing a Sikh youth to risk his life in protest,” said Dhami.

He further remarked that in most sacrilege cases, the accused are released due to the lack of stringent laws, which deeply hurts the sentiments of the Sikh community. “The entire Panth stands in solidarity with the youth protesting for this cause,” Dhami affirmed.

The SGPC, he added, has supported S. Gurjeet Singh Khalsa in the past and continues to stand firmly with him and his demands for justice.
